Achieving Optimal Wellness: Taking Charge of Your Health

Traditional healthcare often falls short in helping patients achieve a state of optimal wellness. The “one-size-fits-all”, assembly-line approach to healthcare allows traditional providers to see as many patients as possible on a day-to-day basis, but results in a surface-level connection between patient and provider, and bandage-like treatments that fail to address the true root cause.

At The Wellness Loft, we strive to build deep relationships with each and every one of our patients, with an understanding that everyone’s health journey is unique. We believe that true health and wellness stem from a holistic approach that considers the intricate connection between your body, mind, and spirit, and we’re here to partner with you on a journey of self-discovery, empowerment, and a sense of agency in your health and well-being.

Why Should You Care?

Ignoring early warning signs of health issues can lead to bigger problems down the line. Healthcare providers and patients alike can be quick to brush off symptoms like fatigue, mood swings, and pain, inviting a progression to more serious conditions later on. Recognizing these signals early and advocating for yourself with your provider can make all the difference in maintaining optimal health and well-being.

Why Traditional Healthcare Often Falls Short

It can be incredibly disheartening to feel dismissed or misunderstood when you are seeking answers about your health. Unfortunately, many people experience these frustrations within the traditional healthcare system, where the focus often shifts from patient-centered care to simply checking boxes.

Understanding the fundamental gaps is the first step toward securing a more personalized and proactive approach to your health.

The Lab Results Dilemma

  • Common scenario: You tell your doctor you feel “off,” but your lab work comes back “within normal limits.” You leave the appointment feeling frustrated and unsure of what to do next.
  • The Problem: Standard lab reference ranges are broad, often designed to catch overt disease rather than detect suboptimal health. Just because your results fall within the “normal” range doesn’t mean you’re at your best.
  • The Solution: Functional medicine practitioners are not looking for values to fit “within normal limits.” Instead, they look for optimal ranges to clearly detect any values that are trending in the wrong direction.

For example, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is a pituitary gland hormone that signals your thyroid gland when more hormone is needed. The conventional reference range is between 0.5 and 4.5 microunits/milliliter. By the time you fall outside of these parameters, you are already in need of intervention and possibly a prescription for exogenous hormone. Functional medicine practitioners look for values to lie within a much more narrow reference range of 1-2 microunits/mL to be able to catch hypo- or hyperthyroidism before it causes problems. By catching it early, one can stop or reverse any developing dysfunction by simply increasing dietary iodine, zinc and selenium to support your thyroid.

The ‘Assembly-Line’ Appointment

  • The Challenge: In a typical 10-minute doctor visit, it’s nearly impossible to dive deep into underlying health concerns.
  • The Problem: Clinicians, often overwhelmed with packed schedules, may focus on ruling out acute illness rather than addressing long-term patterns. Many patients leave their visit feeling unheard, rushed, or more confused.
  • The Solution: True health advocacy means ensuring your concerns are fully explored rather than being brushed aside due to time constraints.

Taking Ownership of Early Symptoms

  • The Importance: Symptoms like brain fog, bloating, or sleep disturbances are not just random annoyances—they are the body’s way of signaling imbalance.
  • The Problem: Patient-Provider relationships are oftentimes very surface-level, lacking a genuine connection, trust, and two-way communication – there is an absence of true collaboration.
  • The Solution: Paying attention to these early symptoms and seeking help before they escalate can prevent more serious health issues down the road. Proactively addressing root causes, such as inflammation, stress, or nutritional deficiencies, can lead to long-term wellness.

Actionable Tips to Advocate for Yourself

Taking a more active role in your wellness journey can be intimidating if you do not know where to start. Here are a few tips:

  • Keep a health journal: Track your diet, sleep, mood changes, and any symptoms to be able to present a clear picture at your medical appointments. Smart watches and fitness trackers make getting useful data on your health easier than ever.
  • Ask specific questions: Instead of accepting “your labs are normal,” you should ask, “What is optimal? How can I achieve that? What are contributing factors?”
  • Seek a holistic approach: Find a practitioner who looks beyond the surface and considers the interconnectedness of your body, mind, and spirit.
